Meet Chaya! She’s the “koding” extraordinaire who works with instructor Jeremiah as part of Game-U’s New York Accelerate program. As Chaya prepares to learn the professional gaming engine, Unity, and the C# programming language, she builds complex and imaginative games in graphical editor Project Spark. Her latest creation? A monster gauntlet!
Organized and inventive to a fault, Chaya brought all her energy to bear on learning Project Spark. The Spark editor’s game props, including characters, environment pieces, and objects, come equipped with “Brains,” where the game designer can use drag-and-drop “Kode” (code) tiles to program them with specific sets of instructions. Chaya uses the tiles to develop enemy AIs and numerous game mechanics. In her monster gauntlet, she coded healing coin pickups, moving platforms, enemy and pickup spawners, key controls, prompts, and sensor-activated events that interact with the player. From the forest start zone to the final boss battle, her player takes on a string of monsters in order to beat the level. Chaya’s a fan of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven, so one her boss enemies is none other than a Poe-inspired raven! Another boss is a troll, while goblins, wolves, and smaller enemies abound. Towards the end of the monster gauntlet, a dragon (the hardest enemy of all) spawns and must be defeated before the player can collect the key that wins the level!
Well done, Chaya! Your game proves how advanced your Kode mastery is. Thanks for sharing this project with us! We’re excited to see all the cool things you’re learning, and we’re looking forward to seeing you graduate to Unity and powerful C# scripts. Project Spark is just the beginning!
